Relief for South Cambridgeshire businesses

Businesses facing tough times in South Cambridgeshire are being reminded that support and advice is available from SCDC which last April set aside a total of £150,000 to help local firms weather the economic downturn.

£25,000 of this was put into the Business Rates Hardship Relief Scheme where qualifying businesses could get a reduction on their business rates, particularly where the closure of a business would harm the level of services in an area.  There is still £15,000 remaining.

SCDC has discretionary powers to reduce business rates in certain circumstances as long as (a) the business ratepayer is suffering financial hardship; and (b) it is in the interests of SCDC’s council taxpayers to do so. Local firms can apply for rate relief if they meet these criteria.

Any local businesses experiencing hardship should visit the SCDC website to see if they meet the criteria or contact SCDC on 03450 450 500. In some cases, business rates may be reduced to nil.

For further information regarding Business Rates visit http://www.scambs.gov.uk/Business/nndr.htm

TV switches to digital THIS year!

This year (2011), television in the Anglia region will switch over to digital broadcasting, and older television equipment may no longer be able to receive these broadcasts.

Cambridgeshire ACRE is trying reach people who may not understand what the“Switchover” is about or who are concerned how it will affect them. They have trained volunteers who will have leaflets and posters to give out and who will also be provided with photo identification so they can be easily recognised. If you belong to a group or organisation which would like more information and a visit from one of these volunteers, please contact Edward Aniskowicz by telephoning 01353 865038 or emailing  This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The new salt bins - and thieves

Your Parish Council has bought and installed several salt bins within the Village. With the harsh start to this year's Winter, this turned out to have been a wise move.

However, since they were installed, one bin was stolen completely, another was moved a distance from where we had installed it, and some people have been using the salt for their own gardens and driveways.

The salt bins are there so that residents can treat public areas; mainly pavements and roads.  The salt should not be used for treating areas on private property.  Theft of, or from, the salt bins is a criminal offence (s.1, Theft Act 1968).  In order to ensure that Fen Ditton villagers can continue to rely upon them in future freezes, Fen Ditton Parish Council will prosecute offenders.

If you see anyone stealing a salt bin, or its contents, please contact the Police.  If it is a crime in progress, use the 999 number; if not, then please use the non-urgent reports number: 0345 456 456 4 (this costs the same as a local call).  We could also appreciate it if you could notify our Crime and Welfare team, by emailing us at This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. The more elderly and infirm are particularly vulnerable to life-threatening falls on ice.  We appreciate your help. Your action will help to prevent serious injury or even death.
